Monique Ransom has 15+ years of higher education experience working with diverse student populations at public and private universities in the areas of academic advising, student program development, recruitment, and retention programming. She joined UMBC in 2017 and is currently the Associate Director for Academic Advisor Development and Student Transition Programs. Monique works collaboratively with the Assistant Vice Provost for Student Success and Academic Advising, providing leadership for the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising. As the central manager for instructor-led training and development opportunities for UMBC’s advising community, she coordinates and instructs live and on-demand training through the Advisor Power Hour Series and co-coordinates monthly Academic Advising Community meetings. Monique also chairs the Academic Action Committee, which oversees the administration of the academic suspension review process, and she supports the Office of Undergraduate Admissions & Orientation with the reinstatement and readmission review process. As an engaged member of the UMBC community, she is the UMBC Pre-Pharmacy Advisor, and serves on the UMBC McNair Scholars Program Advisory Board, Academic Success Center Advisory Board, scholarship selection committee for the Gowda Endowment Scholarship, and the Financial Aid SAP Appeal Committee. Monique developed the Academic Empowerment Series and works collaboratively with the Academic Success Center (ASC) to facilitate sessions to aid in enhancing students’ academic performance. She is an instructor for UNIV102, Academic Success Seminar.
Monique is currently an EAB Rising Higher Ed Leadership fellow. She served a four year term as the Maryland Liaison for the Global Community for Academic Advising (NACADA) from 2020-2024, is an active member of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), and is actively engaged with the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS). She also presents at state, regional, and national higher education conferences. Monique is a first-generation student with a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Central Florida and is an Ed.D candidate in the Educational Leadership program at Frostburg State University.
Monique finds tremendous joy in spending time with her husband and son; listening to reggae, soca, calypso, R&B, and hip-hop; traveling; and making cranial prostheses (wigs) for women experiencing medical hair loss.
